Poultry Judging Contest

CONTEST DESCRIPTION

Judging contests may include categories based on the National 4-H Poultry Judging Contest, including exterior and interior eggs, meat parts, breed identification, nomenclature, oral reasons, live bird judging (egg production), and poultry knowledge. Cloverbuds and exhibitors needing reading or writing assistance may receive help from a Gem State Flock Master 4-H Leader.

CATEGORY DETAILS

Past Production Hens
Contestants will rank hens based on egg production indicators including bleaching, pigment loss, handling quality, abdominal capacity, and overall production traits.

Cut-Up Meat Part Identification:

Contestants will be asked to identify different cut-up meat parts from a fryer chicken

Oral Reasons
A formal, spoken explanation of a contestant’s placing of a class of poultry using correct terminology and a structured format (introduction, comparisons, conclusion).

Breed Identification
Written test using photographs of Standard breeds. Contestants must identify variety, breed, and class. (Also Awarded individually from poultry judging competition).

Poultry Nomenclature
Contestants will label parts of a male or female chicken. (Also Awarded individually from poultry judging competition.)

Poultry Knowledge Test
Written test based on age division using information from the American Poultry Association Standard of Perfection and other credible poultry resources. (Also Awarded individually from poultry judging competition.)

SCORING

Adding total points from eggs, cut up meat parts, past production judging, oral reasons, Breed ID, nomenclature, and knowledge test will determine the class Champion and Reserve Champion for judging.

SCHEDULING

Poultry Nomenclature and Knowledge Test may be taken anytime between 8/24–8/29 by contacting a Poultry Superintendent.

AWARDS: (a Senior, Intermediate, Junior, and Cloverbud levels)

Poultry Photo Contest

ELIGIBILITY

Domestic fowl only: Chickens, Turkeys, Ducks, Geese, Peafowl, Guinea Fowl

CATEGORIES

  • Portrait – Close-up of a single bird
  • Landscape/Waterscape – Bird(s) in a natural setting
  • Action – Bird(s) in motion

JUDGING

People’s Choice (public and exhibitors). One vote per person.

RULES

  • Photos must be taken by the exhibitor
  • No digital enhancement
  • Maximum size: 8" x 10"
  • Mounted on lightweight poster board only
  • No frames, mats, hangers, lettering, or numbers on front
  • Back of mount must include exhibitor name, category, and contact information
  • Maximum of three (3) entries per exhibitor
  • Drop off at poultry testing on August 12

1st–3rd place in each category
Winners announced August 30

Educational Poultry Video Contest

DESCRIPTION

Create an educational video demonstrating a poultry-related topic.

RULES

  • Length: 2–5 minutes
  • May be recorded using a phone
  • Audio and video must be clear

Poultry Bowl

  • Contestants will only compete against others in the same age group
    (Junior vs. Junior, Intermediate vs. Intermediate, etc.).
  • This is a knowledge-based buzzer competition.
  • Questions will be drawn from the American Standard of Perfection and other recognized poultry-related educational materials.

Rooster Crowing Contest

WITH BIRD

Rules:

  • One bird per exhibitor

Award:

  • Winner is the bird with the most crows in five (5) minutes

NO BIRD – EXHIBITOR CROW

Rules:

  • One crow per exhibitor

Award:

  • Best crow as determined by judge or public vote

Chicken Dress Up Contest

RULES

  1. Costumes must be prepared before the fair
  2. Costumes must not endanger the bird
  3. Costume must remain intact for 30 minutes
  4. Judged on originality, design, workmanship, and audience appeal
  5. One entry per exhibitor

AWARDS:

Champion

Reserve Champion

Poultry Bird Game

DESCRIPTION

A bird selected from the American Poultry Association Standard of Perfection will be chosen by the Poultry Superintendent.

RULES

  • Exhibitors may ask yes or no questions only
  • Goal is to identify the breed and variety

AWARD

Winner is the exhibitor who correctly identifies the bird using the fewest questions.
